Komui is 29 years old, Chinese, and Supervisor of the Science Department of the Black Order. The Black Order is an organization set up to combat the Millennium Earl, a mysterious being that intends to destroy the human race with akuma, a combination of machinery and a human soul. The primary way that the Black Order combats the Earl is by use of people known as exorcists. Exorcists are compatible with Innocence, a special material that forms weapons to fight against the akuma. (…I feel like I’m writing an encyclopedia).

However, the Black Order is obviously not entirely comprised of exorcists. The Black Order is, in fact, a huge organization with a giant castle as its HQ and branches, located in each major continent. There are many different tasks for Order members, and thus many different departments, such as intelligence, medical, signal, security, diplomatic, logistics, and, of course, the science department. The science department does things like design the exorcists’ uniforms, help train new exorcists, study things created by the Earl that somehow fall into their hands, et cetera. As Supervisor, Komui is the boss of everyone in the department. Obviously, this is a very important job.

Komui’s reasons for joining the Black Order are quite honorable. When he and his little sister, Lenalee, were young, their parents were killed by akuma. They survived, and the Black Order discovered that Lenalee was compatible with the Innocence; in other words, capable of becoming an exorcist. She was taken from her brother, leaving Komui horrified; his sister was being kept there and away from him entirely against her will. He decided that, no matter what it took, he’d join the Black Order and become important enough to be by Lenalee’s side when she needed him. He succeeded, and Lenalee felt better in the Order.

When we first meet Komui in-series, he proves himself to be…not exactly what one would consider professional. He’d lost a new exorcist and D. Gray man’s main character, Allen’s letter of recommendation from General Cross in his disastrously messy desk, causing the Order to believe him to be an intruder. After Allen nearly gets murdered by another exorcist by the name of Kanda, Komui finds Allen’s letter and apologizes. He is also known to find ways of slacking off of work, such as napping, taking and making phone calls, then pretending to continue the conversation long after the other person has hung up, and spending his time constructing robots. One such robot was Komurin II, a giant piece of machinery that was meant to have artificial intelligence and operate on injured exorcists. Komurin II had a defect, however; upon consuming coffee, it went completely berserk and began destroying the castle while seeking out exorcists in need of operation. Lenalee ended up destroying it, much to Komui’s regret. He also got kicked in the head for being an idiot and wasting everyone’s time.

However, Komui is not just an insane person. If he were, he never would’ve made it to his position in the Order. He does everything he can to protect the exorcists and finders (people sent to search for possible locations of Innocence). He designs the uniforms for them and performs operations on injured exorcists. He also knows his work is serious. When several exorcists got killed, someone had wanted one of the fallen exorcist’s body to be sent home. Komui refused, knowing this would make it possible for this former exorcist to become an akuma. He also knows to trust in himself when he knows he’s right. When the Order was infiltrated, they had been in possession of an akuma creating egg. One of Komui’s superiors, Malcom C. Rouvelier, insisted that the egg be protected from the attack. However, the akuma and Noah clan member that were there intended to take it back, and were overpowering them. So, despite his supervisor’s orders, he demanded that the egg be destroyed.

Komui is capable of being both extremely goofy and extremely serious. He is infamous for his “sister complex”, which comes out with him clinging to Lenalee, doting on her, being overprotective of her, etc. An example of this is, whenever he is caught napping, the only way to wake him up is to tell him that Lenalee is getting married. He will immediately wake up, complete with dramatic flailing and yelling.

He is a total coffee addict. His preferred brand is Blue Mountain, but he’ll take anything Lenalee gives him. He has a special mug, which has a pink bunny on it. He can frequently be found being overdramatic and hyperactive.

His serious side, however, is quite present. He’s always ready to work his tail off if a true danger opposes them. He always seeks to improve the uniforms given to exorcists to better protect them. He knows that the higher-ups of the Black Order don’t really care about the exorcists’ wellbeing, so he takes that matter into his own hands.
